Dr. Bedinghaus, MD, IFMCP

All my life I have aspired to a higher calling. First, it was to traditional medicine, and I answered that call by becoming a pediatrician. After more than a decade of work as a practicing pediatrician, I became greatly disturbed by the lack of understanding of the underlying causes of the suffering of so many children.

Why I Love To Practice Functional Medicine

Over these last 20+ years, I have explored various holistic approaches to healing. My first steps toward discovering the innate wholeness of each human was through the study and practice of homeopathy. Practicing the art of medicine as a homeopath broadened my perceptions of the amazing interconnectedness of the human body, mind and spirit. Many people were healed through my past work as a homeopath.

Continuing to follow my calling, I discovered the “New Medicine” that focuses on the root causes of human suffering. Functional medicine is becoming the medicine for the 21st century. It offers a systems-based understanding of all the factors that affect human health and disease. We don’t get stuck trying to fix one symptom at a time with a pill. We look for underlying causes of illness that help us discover how multiple symptoms can stem from a few root causes.

Functional medicine gives both doctors and patients a new way to frame disease. We look at the body as it truly is – an ecosystem—and we offer a systems approach to medicine not a “symptoms approach” to medicine. With patient after patient, just by improving diet and nutrition, we see seemingly unrelated symptoms cured– like headaches, fatigue, indigestion, muscle aches, poor memory, poor sleep, irritability, anxiety, and more.

What I love about functional medicine is that it is very individualistic, holistic, and scientific. Spending time with my patients in exploring the many factors that have influenced their health, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, has added to my ability to help them recover from symptoms and live life more fully.

My life has been greatly enriched by the beloved animals I call my friends. I have a precious dog, Shiva, and 3 amazing parrots. They continually remind me of the sacredness of all life.
