Lab Test Information

As a functional medicine practice, we oftentimes see patients that just feel “not quite right” – where there is no one dominant symptom that can point us in the right direction. Examples can range from chronic bloating, unexplained headaches or migraines, chronic fatigue, insomnia, to any number of vague symptoms.

Beyond exploring possible lifestyle factors to identify the root cause of chronic dis-ease or wellness challenges, we frequently use advanced functional medicine lab testing that provide valuable information about health at the cellular level.

The test results help guide our treatment recommendations in major ways – allowing us to craft an approach unique to your situation, genetics, and biochemistry.

GI-Effects Profile

A simple stool specimen provides important information on inflammation and how well you digest and absorb the food you eat.  This profiles also provides a detailed picture of your gut bacteria and whether there are any unhealthy bacteria, parasites or yeast.  Many health problems start in the gut so analyzing the health of your gut is important for your overall health.

Breath test for SIBO

SIBO is a condition that results in excessive bloating and gas, especially after meals.  Other symptoms may include constipation, diarrhea or nausea.  This breath test can detect the gases produced by the bacteria.  Genova offers either a 2 or 3 hours SIBO assessment.  The 3-hour SIBO profile provides insight in gas levels over a longer period of time and is recommended for patients with slower GI transit time or constipation.

ION/ NutrEVAL

These tests include a blood and urine nutritional analysis that includes amino acids, vitamins, minerals, a heavy metal screen, oxidative stress markers, fatty acids (Omega 3, 6, etc.) and urine for organic acids.  These are a foundational test that measures 100s of areas in the body that are impacted by poor nutrition.  With these lab tests, Dr. Bedinghaus can create a personalized health plan that may include professional supplements and nutritional recommendations.

LabCorp/Quest Standard Test

Other basic lab tests such as thyroid, cholesterol, complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, Vitamin B12, folate and other indicated blood and urine tests are done through LabCorp or Quest.

Adrenocortex Stress Profile

This profile provides an assessment of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis using carefully timed salivary samples of both cortisol and DHEA.  We use the CAR (cortisol awakening response) in addition to the 4 timed salivary samples to get an overview of your adrenal glands and the impact of stress on cortisol levels.  Since decreasing the amount of stress in our patients’ lives is part of making lifestyle changes for optimal health, this test gives us valuable information about how well the adrenals are functioning.
