Have you ever stopped to think about what your health is worth? Well, you can’t really put a price tag on it, can you? It’s worth everything because without it, what do you have?
In our traditional healthcare system in the US, there is more emphasis on treating diseases than prevention. That’s a sad reality. Some have said that we don’t have a healthcare system but rather a disease management system.
What do you think preventative healthcare would do to the astronomical amount of money?
The traditional doctor has not been adequately trained to focus on prevention rather than disease management. And yet, there are no limits to the amount of money health-conscious people spend out of pocket for alternative, holistic approaches to prevention and maintenance of good health.
According to the World Health Organization, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
What is Health really?
Health, like happiness, is our natural state. It isn’t something to be gained but a state of being to be realized. Most of us have not yet attained an experience of our full and true innate wholeness because of:
- our beliefs about our mind, body, and spirit
- our attitudes held about life
- how we choose the lifestyles that we embrace
- polluted, toxic environments where, unfortunately, we often find ourselves living
Health is an inner state of well-being, free from diseases that seem to escalate every day. This list of diseases has expanded beyond belief, especially in the last few decades. Disease is NOT natural even though it occurs in astronomical numbers in our human family. As a physician, my goal and purpose is to lift the consciousness of those who come to me for healing to the realization of the phenomenal capacity of the body to always heal itself, if and as, it is given the vital support needed by how we live. That means we do have a choice about the state of our health.
In functional medicine, we take a whole-person approach to anything dysfunctional. We treat people and not diseases. Functional medicine is a system biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of physiological dysfunction that contributes to disease. Systems Biology is based on the understanding that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and everything is connected.
Functional medicine is at its core Holistic Medicine. When you see a functional medicine doctor, you are being treated as a whole being: mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. It is the New Medicine of today.
