Ever have a “gut feeling” about something? Can it be that your gut actually thinks or is it something else at work?
Too many times patients go to their doctor for excessive gas or abdominal bloating only to be told to take antacids or gas medicines. Your doctor may have no real solutions to your chronic problem. You may also mention to your doctor that since you have had so many GI problems, you find yourself in a fog, can’t think clearly, and you think you might be depressed. Yet all you may be offered a prescription for an antidepressant instead of an investigation into the health or lack thereof of your gut.
Well there is a better way, and that’s the functional medicine way. In functional medicine we’re always asking why what’s going on? Why is this happening to this person, so that we can get at the core issues, and help begin to solve the problems of why you’re just not able to think like you used to and your brain is still foggy all the time.
As I said previously, most health issues start in the gut. That makes sense, doesn’t it since what you eat has an impact not only on the health of your GI tract, but also on your whole body. The ancients have always said, “Let food be thy medicine.”
Health starts in the gut. You have to properly digest your food and then you have to absorb the nutrients from your food. If you are eating the Standard American Diet of processed foods, too many sugary snacks, and not enough fruits and vegetables, your gut will revolt.
Frequently, your gut symptoms are related to these “dead foods.” When toxins and too many of the wrong kinds of food hit your gut, they often will cause inflammation and damage the cells of your intestines leading to what we now call “leaky gut”.
So those two phrases the Gut-Brain connection and the Brain-Gut connection are interrelated because you know, you have part of your nervous system actually in the lining of your stomach. So it makes sense, doesn’t it?
My specialty is healing the gut through integrative and functional medicine – that’s right, I’m on a mission to get people healthy without harmful, toxic and expensive prescription drugs.
