Most people believe their genes determine their health and their susceptibility to get sick and suffer from diseases. This belief is so strong that people who buy into this actually often succumb to developing what they think are inherited and therefore, unavoidable disease states. Your beliefs really do create your reality, but you can question and challenge those beliefs with new information about how this wonderful body of yours actually functions.
For a little background information let’s go back to Darwin who, in his book, The Origin of Species, suggested hereditary factors passed from parent to child control the characteristics of an individual’s life. Then came the discovery of the DNA double helix, the material of which genes are made. DNA became the master of our fate…physically, mentally, and emotionally. It was our defective genes that caused all our problems and played havoc with the health of our bodies. After much research and greater understanding of the role of DNA in our physiology, we now know that DNA is not the supreme controller of our biology.
Let’ take a closer look at what we now understand about DNA and our genes. Genes are molecular blueprints (like the blueprints used to build your home) used in the construction of cells, tissues and organs. A blueprint has no power, in and of itself, to build anything. There has to be something that “reads” the blueprint. It is the single cell’s awareness of the environment, not its genes, that sets into motion the mechanisms of life. Like the cell, the character of our lives is not determined by our genes, but by our response to the environmental signals that propel life.
The central dogma of biology/science…that our genes determine our health…is fundamentally flawed. This central dogma says genes control life, but it has a major flaw; genes cannot turn themselves on or off. Something in the environment has to trigger gene activity.
The term, epigenetics – the study of the molecular mechanisms by which environmental signals control gene activity, has ushered in a new era of greater understanding that we truly are NOT a victim of our genes.
Yes, there are single gene genetic disorders, but they affect less than 2% of the population. So many of our diseases are the result of complex interactions among multiple genes and environmental factors. But these genes are not activated until something triggers them. . something from the environment.
Recent epigenetic research has established that DNA blueprints passed down through genes are not set in concrete at birth. Genes are not our destiny. Environmental influences including nutrition, stress, emotions, toxins and our thoughts and beliefs can modify those genes.
In the chromosome, the DNA forms the core and the proteins cover the DNA like a sleeve. When the genes are covered, their information cannot be read.
How do you get the sleeve off? You need an environmental signal to cause the sleeve protein to change shape and detach from the DNA…allowing the gene to be read. Once the DNA is uncovered, the cell makes a copy of the exposed gene. So the activity of the gene is controlled by the presence or absence of the protein which in turn is controlled by environmental signals.
IT IS THE ENVIRONMENTAL SIGNALS THAT CAUSES THE REGULATORY PROTEIN TO CHANGE SHAPE AND PEEL OFF THE DNA SO THE GENE CAN BE READ…OR TURNED ON.
Genes cannot turn on by themselves…they are blueprints.
So the science of epigenetics is about how the environment controls the expression of inherited genes.
These epigenetic mechanisms are found to be a factor in a variety of diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Only 5% of cancer and CV disease patients can attribute their disease to heredity.
95% of patients with breast cancer are not due to inherited genes.
THE MALIGNANCIES IN A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF CANCER PATIENTS ARE DERIVED FROM ENVIRONMENTALLY INDUCED EPIGENETIC ALTERNATIONS AND NOT DEFECTIVE GENES.
Bottom line: Our cells are shaped by where they live…their environment.
Let’s now look at how our biology is shaped by our beliefs.
The physical body can be affected by the immaterial mind. Thoughts, the mind’s energy, directly influence how the physical brain controls the body’s physiology. Our beliefs are thoughts and perceptions that we hold in mind. Our beliefs are not always based on truth, but come to us from our family and society.
Harnessing the power of your mind can often be more effective than the drugs you have been programmed to believe you need. But, just thinking positive thoughts is not necessarily going to heal you or change your biology. It is the deeply rooted beliefs stored in the subconscious mind that need to be reprogrammed.
You can choose what you believe: choose a world full of love, and your body will respond by becoming healthier. Choose to believe that you live in a dark world full of ear, and your health will be compromised. Positive thoughts and beliefs are a biological mandate for a happy, healthy life.
At Healing Unleashed, we offer alternatives to the typical traditional, disease-centered medical model – alternative methods of healing that deal with finding the root causes of diseases and correcting them. In other words, we are changing the cellular environment to its original state of wholeness so that your body functions optimally.
